Credit

In today's world, the cost of living seems to be going up all the time, but salaries aren't keeping up the pace. And layoffs seem to be more of the norm than the exception. Because of that, using credit seems to be a means of survival. If you're at the point where you're using credit for survival, not just shopping, you may need credit counseling. And if you're doing a lot of shopping with your credit cards (and not just for necessities) you may be racking up some wicked credit card debt. You could probably benefit from some credit counseling as well.

Credit Counseling: Something for Everyone

In the past,

creditcounseling has gotten a bad rap. People assume that credit counseling is only for people who have bad credit or are desperate. The thing is, credit counseling can benefit people in all different stages of debt. Maybe you're someone who watches their finances closely and you're concerned because your income isn't covering your expenses adequately enough. Seeing a credit counselor can benefit you because they can help you develop a budget and offer ideas of ways to live within your means. They may suggest a part-time job to supplement your income or simply cutting back for a while.

Perhaps you were never concerned about your debt until your monthly minimums became unaffordable and you started maxing out your credit cards. A credit counselor can help you develop a budget and teach you how to use credit wisely, and in most cases they will suggest a debt relief program such as debt consolidation.

Credit is nothing to be afraid of as long as you know how to use it wisely. Here are some tips about using credit wisely:

Using Credit to Develop A Budget

Are you brave enough (or disciplined enough) to put all your monthly expenses on your credit card? Obviously you can't do this with rent and car payments, but if are disciplined enough to put all of your expenses like gas, groceries, toiletries, etc. on your credit card, you can use your statement to gauge how much you're spending each month. You may be surprised at how much you're spending on groceries or at Target each month, and it may be easy to cut back.

You have to be very careful doing this, however. Studies have shown that people who use their credit card for everything tend to spend up to 30% more than those who pay for goods using cash or writing a check. If you don't think you can be this disciplined, make your credit card inaccessible unless it's an absolute emergency and use your checking account statement to develop a budget.

Credit doesn't have to be your nemesis. In fact, many people who have gone through a credit counseling or a debt management program have emerged not only debt free, but also with a better understanding of credit. They're more confident about their ability to be more responsible with their spending. Don't be afraid. Call a credit counselor about your credit card debts today.
